Vertex pistons are manufactured using Low-Ex aluminium alloys with 12%, 18% or 21% silicon content. Pistons are made using gravity casting or hydraulic forging. The material structure is refined through a heat treatment process using an automatic HT implant with solubilization by quenching in hot water. Machining is completed using the latest CNC machines, software, and diamond tools, achieving specific surface finishes. Each piston undergoes rigorous manual and automatic quality control. Vertex pistons are coated with Molybdenum Bisulphite for break-in and friction reduction. A new Phosphate Coating offers increased hardness, light surface porosity, and superior adhesion qualities over the Molybdenum Coating, doubling its durability. This piston is 53.97mm with a single ring.

Advanced Materials and Construction

Vertex manufactures their pistons using high quality Low-Ex silicon-charged aluminium alloys. Depending on the application, these alloys contain between 12% and 21% silicon to minimize thermal expansion. The production process involves either gravity casting or hydraulic forging, followed by a sophisticated heat treatment process that refines the material structure for superior strength.

Precision Machining and Quality Control

Each piston is machined using state of the art CNC equipment and diamond tipped tooling. This allows for specific surface finishes tailored to the requirements of the engine cylinder. Enhanced Coating Technology

To maximize performance, this piston features a dual-layer coating system:

  • Molybdenum Bisulphite Coating: A specialized black coating that assists during the critical piston break-in period and reduces internal friction during operation.
  • Phosphate Coating: Borrowing technology from Formula One engines, the phosphate base provides a slight increase in surface hardness and introduces light porosity. This creates superior adhesion for the Molybdenum layer, effectively doubling the durability of the protective coating.
