Vertex pistons are manufactured using Low-Ex aluminium alloys with 12%, 18% or 21% silicon depending on the application. Pistons are made using gravity cast or hydraulic forging processes. The material structure is refined through a hi-tech Heat Treatment process in an automatic HT implant with solubilization by quench in hot water. This heat treating process is cutting edge technology for these aluminium alloys. The machining process is completed using the latest CNC machines and software, and diamond tools are used. This high-tech tooling allows for specific surface finishes depending on the final application. Every Vertex piston undergoes a rigorous manual and automatic quality control process. Vertex pistons are coated with a special Molybdenum Bisulphite black coating to aid during piston break-in and reduce friction within the cylinder. Vertex has introduced a new, all over Phosphate Coating, which has a slight hardness increase and light surface porosity that exhibits superior adhesion qualities of the Molybdenum Coating, extending the coating durability for twice as long. This piston has a bore of 76.98mm and a compression ratio of 13.4:1.
