Vertex pistons are manufactured using Low-Ex aluminium alloys with 12%, 18% or 21% silicon content depending on the application. The blank parts are made using gravity casting or hydraulic forging, then the material structure is refined through a hi-tech heat treatment process using an automatic HT implant with solubilization by quench in hot water. This heat treatment is cutting-edge technology for these aluminium alloys. The machining process uses the latest CNC machines and software, along with diamond tools, to achieve specific surface finishes based on the final application. Each Vertex piston undergoes rigorous manual and automatic quality control. Vertex pistons are coated with a special Molybdenum Bisulphite black coating to aid break-in and reduce friction. Vertex has also introduced a new Phosphate Coating, which increases hardness and has light surface porosity for superior adhesion and double the durability of the Molybdenum Coating. Vertex utilizes exotic Low-Ex (low expansion) silicon-charged aluminium alloys to construct their pistons. Depending on the specific application, these alloys contain between 12% and 21% silicon.
