Vertex pistons are manufactured using Low-Ex aluminium alloys with 12%, 18% or 21% silicon depending on the application. Pistons are manufactured using gravity cast or hydraulic forging processes, with material structure refined using heat treatment in an automatic HT implant with solubilization by quench in hot water. This heat treatment process is cutting edge technology for these aluminium alloys. The machining process is completed using the latest CNC machines and software, as well as diamond tools. This high tech tooling allows for specific surface finishes depending on the final application of the finished piston. Every Vertex piston passes through a rigorous manual and automatic quality control process. Vertex pistons are coated with a special Molybdenum Bisulphite black coating to aid during piston break-in and reduce friction within the cylinder. Vertex has introduced a new, all over, Phosphate Coating which has a slight hardness increase combined with a light surface porosity that exhibits superior adhesion qualities of the Molybdenum Coating, extending the coating durability.
